FAQs

Are subcontractors covered under my contractor insurance?

In most cases, subcontractors are not automatically covered under your contractor insurance policy. Each subcontractor is typically responsible for carrying their own general liability and workers' compensation insurance. However, as the general contractor, you can be held liable for damages or injuries caused by uninsured subs. That's why it's crucial to require certificates of insurance (COIs) and appropriate endorsements from every subcontractor before work begins. This protects your business, helps avoid coverage gaps, and ensures compliance with project or licensing requirements.

Do I need insurance if I am a subcontractor?

Yes. Even if you are a subcontractor, you should carry your own business insurance. At a minimum, this includes general liability coverage to protect against property damage or injuries you cause and workers’ compensation if you have employees. Many general contractors and project owners will not hire subcontractors who cannot show proof of insurance. Having your own contractor insurance policy protects your finances if something goes wrong on the jobsite and helps you win more projects by showing professionalism and reliability.

What does it mean to be a licensed and bonded contractor?

A licensed and bonded contractor is one who has met the state's licensing requirements and carries a contractor's bond, which provides financial protection for clients. Licensing ensures you meet experience and regulatory standards, while bonding guarantees that if you fail to complete a job or violate state laws, the customer can recover financial losses. Being licensed, bonded, and insured builds trust with clients and shows that you operate legally and responsibly in the construction industry.

What insurance coverages do contractors need to carry?

Every construction business should have a contractor insurance program that includes several key coverages: General Liability protects against third-party injuries or property damage. Workers' Compensation covers employee injuries on the job. Commercial Auto covers vehicles used for business operations. Pollution Liability covers environmental or contamination-related claims. Professional Liability protects against errors in design, project management, or consulting work. Inland Marine or Equipment Coverage protects tools and machinery. Umbrella or Excess Liability provides extra protection beyond your main policies. Depending on your projects, you may also need Builder's Risk. Together, these coverages protect your business from financial loss and help you stay compliant with contract and licensing requirements.

Is workers' compensation insurance required for construction businesses in our state?

Yes. In Nevada and most other states, workers' compensation insurance is required for construction businesses that have employees. It provides benefits for employees injured on the job, covering medical costs and lost wages while protecting your company from lawsuits. Even if you are a sole proprietor or independent contractor, having workers' compensation coverage can be a smart move. It ensures you are protected if you are hurt while working and can make you eligible for more contracts that require proof of insurance.
