At the end of the day, we all want to get our jobs done and get home safely. For workers in a restaurant, there are some injuries that are more common than others. The most common injuries are Cuts & Punctures. Theses injuries tend to be relatively minor. Slip and Fall injuries are the second most common type but generally lead to more serious problems. In fact, when you factor in time missed form work and medical bills, Slip and Fall injuries cost 4.5 times as much as Cuts & Punctures. If you want to increase the safety in your restaurant and reduce the cost of your workers’ compensation insurance, the #1 thing you can do is reduce Slip and Fall Injuries. (ProTip: Slip and Falls are also the #1 type of Customer claim as well).

75% of all worker Slip and Fall injuries are caused by two things:

  • 50% are caused by Unsafe or Unclean Floors
  • 25% are caused by Improper Footwear

By monitoring these two things, managers and owners can reduce your most significant risk factor by 75%.

So, what can you do?

  1. Unsafe and Unclean Floors –
    • Make sure that your floor surfaces are slip resistant materials
    • Only use commercial mats and rugs and check them for wear regularly
    • Make sure spills are cleaned immediately
    • Clearly mark any steps, slopes or other potential hazards
  2. Improper Floors
    • Train employees on proper footwear
    • Provide a footwear allowance or provide nonslip footwear for employees
    • Train managers to be on the lookout for improper footwear and to enforce standards

Contact Statement Insurance Agency and we can help you update your training manuals and provide specific instruction to employees and managers.
